SambaFunk! at “Life is Living Festival”

SambaFunk! at Life Is For LivingAs an invading army of 99 percenters assembled in New York City, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and other major cities, Oakland responded by undermining the cultural status quo – and spreading the love by getting grassroots, multicultural and life-affirming with it.

A week of build-up came to beautiful fruition with Saturday’s Life is Living festival, which attracted thousands to DeFremery Park, rechristened Bobby Hutton Park in honor of the Black Panther icon. You might say an undercurrent of cultural militancy was in evidence at the festival: slogan-laden blue posters in honor of the Panthers advertised the festivities in the weeks and days leading up to the event, lending an air of consciousness and dignity to marketing efforts.

There was so much going on at Life is Living … it was almost overwhelming – with Hood Games, promoting skateboarding for kids, Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle (more on this later), a petting zoo and the large art installations by local artists – including a brilliant tribute to Hutton by Brett Cook, Youth Speaks poetry slam; beatbox/freestyle ciphers, food justice and permaculture demonstrations, a “stem-posium” and the off-the-chain live performances by Pete Escovedo, Raw G, Ryan Nicole Peters and Kev Omoaghe Akhidenor, Los Rakas and Sarai Knowledge.

Love & Loss: Días de los Muertos 2011

October 12, 2011 – December 11, 2011

Oakland Museum of CA

1000 Oak St

Oakland, CA

17th annual Days of the Dead exhibit explores the stories behind home altars

Celebrated between October 31 and November 2, the Mesoamerican tradition of Días de los Muertos is widely associated with iconic and colorful elements—such as sugar skulls, marigolds, and altars, or ofrendas—arranged or created in honor of deceased loved ones. This year OMCA celebrates the 17th annual Days of the Dead exhibition, which looks beyond the icons to delve into the heartfelt tales of love and loss that the ofrendas have to tell. Featuring 14 artists and student and community groups with personal stories related to Días de los Muertos, the exhibition pays special attention to the importance of ofrendas and celebrates this ritual as a vehicle for creating intimate sacred spaces and sharing memories.

Featured Artists: Amalia Mesa Bains, Chris Granillo, Xochitl Nevel Guerrero, Roberto Guerrero, Rubén Guzmán Campos, Joaquin Newman, Ernesto Hernández Olmos, Dee Dee Rodriguez, Tessie Scharaga, Consuelo Jiménez Underwood, Andres Cisneros Galindo, Irene Perez, Rafael Jesús González, and Hermina Albarran Romero. Participating schools and community groups: Peralta Elementary, with lead artists Trena Noval and Ellen Oppenheimer; Laney College, with lead artists Leslee Stradford and Arturo Davila; and Clínica de La Raza and Sutter VNA & Hospice, Emeryville, with lead artist Alicia Diaz.

SF, CA

Gallery Hours: Tues–Fri, 12–7PM, Sat 11–5PM, Sun 11–3PM.

El Di´a de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, provides a way for people to embrace the beauty of life and to honor the spirits of the dead. Intricate, traditional altars and complex art installations created by more than 80 Bay Area artists from a breadth of cultural backgrounds are on display in Illuminations: Dia de los Muertos 2011. Altars and installations range from deeply personal to political and many invite contribution or interaction from visitors.

The theme “Illuminations” was chosen by curators Rene´ and Rio Yan~ez to symbolize a source of light for spiritual and intellectual reflection. This year’s exhibition is dedicated to community pillar and Mission District business owner Martha Sanchez and renowned artist Pablo Picasso.

The exhibition continues to examine the ways technology shapes the celebration of Day of the Dead. Once again, a Flickr group enables the exhibition’s curators to accept digital photos as offerings to those who people want to honor. The public can upload their digital contributions here. Selected images will be printed and displayed as part of the exhibit.

Black Star with Los Rakas & DJ D Sharp

Tues Nov 15, 2011

Mezzanine

444 Jessie Street @ Mint

SF, CA

Articulate and provocative, Black Star looks to classic rappers like KRS-One, Run D.M.C. and Public Enemy to inform their sound. Their self-titled debut grapples with “black love and esteem” and is concerned primarily about the stories that aren’t being told in their communities. They are one of the few hip-hop bands that realize not everyone in the African-American community is involved in a gangsta culture. That fact alone makes them some of the most intelligent rappers to grace the vapid hip-hop scene in the late ’90s.

Scarface Live!

Thurs Nov 17, 2011

The New Parish

579 18th Street (at San Pablo)

Oakland, CA

Brad Jordan, better known by his stage name Scarface, is an American rapper originally known for his work as a member of The Geto Boys. Scarface is known for his edgy and controversial lyrics that often consist of cursing, violence or expressing his discomfort concerning the police.

Scarface began his career as Akshen (pronounced Action) recording solo for Lil’ Troy’s Short Stop Records, a local label in Houston. He would go on to sign with Rap-A-Lot Records and join a group who were collectively known as Ghetto Boys replacing one member who left, later respelled Geto Boys, and released the groups second album Grip It! On That Other Level (1989), a highly successful LP that garnered the group a large fanbase, in spite of their violent lyrics keeping them far from radio and MTV. He is named after the 1983 movie title Scarface. He along with UGK (Bun B./Pimp C.) are credited with putting Houston Rap on the mainstream and led the way for a new wave of Houston rappers in the new millennium.

Cantos Yorubas: afro-cuban songs to the goddesses yemayá, oshún and oyá with john santos

Friday, November 18 7-8:30pm

Mountain Yoga
2071 Antioch Court, Suite 100
Oakland, CA

John Santos returns to Mountain Yoga for another exhilarating evening of Afro-Cuban chant, this time celebrating women in an evening of songs in tribute to the goddesses – or female orisha – of the Yoruba tradition.

Orisha represent elements of nature. Much philosophy, history and mythologies concerning them have been distilled through generations of oral tradition. The female images of Yemayá, Oshún and Oyá are among the most highly venerated orisha, and represent the realms of sweet and salt water, wind, lightning, the cemetary, motherhood, sensuality and warrior spirit.

The traditions of Yoruba (Nigeria) origin are among the most prevalent and influential African cultural elements on the island of Cuba. This series of rezos y cantos (prayers and chants) are derived from the canon of Yoruba spiritual-based songs that strongly inform both sacred and secular contemporary Cuban cultural expression.

Last time John came to Mountain Yoga the positive vibes of his chants continued to reverberate with us for weeks. Don’t miss this chance to put a lilt in your step and joy in your heart that will carry far beyond the evening.
